A downloadable map selection TTRPG

Our TTRPG is based on the map-making game “Beak, Feather & Bone,” but our version is designed to be more competitive, with more elements of luck involved. Ultimately, this is a world-building RPG about co-operative competition,

MECHANICS

Players agree on a set number of rounds at the beginning of the game. Each player rolls for their faction with a 1d6 dice at the beginning of the game. Each player takes a turn per round, selecting buildings on a map, describing the function and form of the building and then has that building. There is a 1d6 dice roll event at the end of each round (1 = terrible event, 2-4 = bad/neutral event, 6 = lucky event), where one user will pull a card for the whole group, and players must decide on a collective solution on how to best handle the event. If characters do not agree on a solution within 5 minutes, everyone loses 5 gold. The player with most points (gold, property, characters) at the end of all the rounds is the winner.

AESTHETICS

Our version of this game takes place in a Victorian dieselpunk inspired world. The town is something of an oasis compared to the harsh sandy conditions of the world around itself. There is technology but not too far advanced and humanoid animal characters, with mainly human characteristics (ex. Lizard people, bird people) though this is open to player imagination. The aesthetic is grungy and industrial, where much of the town structures are made of metal, stone and wood.

NARRATIVE

Players take up role of representative in 1 of 6 different factions known as Estates, who work together to better the town, but also want their faction to have the most influence.

The narrative is built for the city and its people. Each game is different, game progresses, more buildings will be defined, more characters will be added and the history of the city will become more complex and intriguing.

Currently there are no hard copies of The Heart of Varvaron, so we have a few recommendations to get you started playing digitally.

  • If you are playing from multiple computers, you can use your favorite voice chat, and a collaborative drawing app.
    • We recommend aggie.io. Just upload the map image to a new canvas, and share the link with other players to start collaborative drawing.
  • Use the in chat Discord dice roll function, or an online dice roller.
  • For the event card part of the round, you can use a random number generator to help you pick cards at random.
    • Change the numbers from 1-10 for the Black and White Decks, and from 1-40 for the Red Deck.
